Gloop dynamics

Tonight saw the return of Joe, after a couple of weeks away. Joe and I arrived at Steve and Anja’s, raring to go. But Steve was still eating and no one else was there yet. Except Anja, of course, who was busy trying to placate Luther, who was crying about something. Perhaps he’d just found out he couldn’t join in with board games.

Slowly, the gang arrived, left for chips and then arrived again, and meanwhile while of us (me, Joe, Steve and Adam) played Augustus. A roman-themed game where tiles are drawn from a bag and its symbol matches (or may not) on a tile you’ve got in front of you. It is, effectively, Roman Bingo (or Bingus, as I quipped).


Steve flew into an early lead and stayed there, picking up bonuses left right and centre which gave him a commanding win over the other three. Adam’s dreams of a perfect five wins in a row stood no chance against this.

I can’t say I was hugely convinced. I felt like I was watching the game being played, rather than being part of it. Plus, the game suffered from a lot of interruptions and so perhaps lost a lot of flow. It’s supposed to be a light half hour game, but we managed to stretch it out.

Now, with Luther showing no signs of giving up, and Sam and Hannah having arrived (with exciting gossip about Adam having categorised all the games he's played since GNN began), we went for a quick game we could play until Anja got the baby off to sleep. We chose 7 Wonders. It’s a bit of a luck-fest with six, but at least we all knew it and could get it started quickly. It was a high scoring, quick-fire game.


Steve went into Sciences in a big way, and I was best soldier, but only because those were the cards handed to me at the end of the game. Hannah kept “accidentally” building armies and Joe, once again, barely had any materials of his own. Steve ruined Adam’s game when he built a last minute army, without seeing the armies perched on Adam’s wonder. Instead of a five-point bonus for one of them, they cancelled each other out. Sam scored in every category (except Science) and that is how the game is meant to be played.

Then Anja arrived and Hannah bowed out of the next game, and we split into two groups. Kingdom Builder was the attraction on one table, and it was enticing enough that it looked like there’d be four on that table, while Sam and I played out a rematch on Lords of Waterdeep. But Steve joined us, and so the three of use strode, side by side, down the quaint medieval streets of Waterdeep, recruiting clerics and calling them wizards by accident, before setting off on our quests: studying arches, placating statues and doing things to undermountains.

It was another close game, and as round six began, we were all next to each other on the score track. In the end, though, Steve had enough in reserve to push through to the end.

Anja and Joe rounded off the evening with a little Augustus: Joe 74, Anja 61. A score that Joe graciously called “not a whitewash.”

On the form table, Steve loses three four-pointers and jumps to the head of the queue. Three rivals stay in close contention, though, looking over his shoulder and tutting.

  1. Well done Sam, that's a great total for seven wonders! Interested to know if you had the Palace. Thats become a bit of a talisman for us in our games...Great picture.

  2. No I didn't! I built my first two sections of wonder quickly as the second part allowed me to build something for free during each age. But - like having the top tiles in Ra - I kept hedging my bets and only actually used it once, late in round three. I was lucky in that in the first age neither of my neighbours built military (neither did I) and I got a couple of cards that got me lots of money. I also seemed to get a lot of cards I had the resources for - two stone, two wood and two ore might just be the secret combo! Lastly I built three guilds - none of them were amazing but combined they gave me 18points.

    Waterdeep was an incredibly tense affair. I finished with two mandatory quests in my hand. In the penultimate round I almost put one on Steve (who didn't have the necessary white cubes) but he'd just gotten rid of one, and I couldn't bring myself to do it to him. Next time I'll know better!

  3. I really enjoyed 7 Wonders, but I felt like I had an easy game - most turns it was fairly obvious what I should do. That said, toward the end of the game my options petered out rather. I think I scored in every category except sciences too - but I only built one guild for 4 pts. In retrospect I wished I'd gone for side B of my wonder too.

    Augustus was better with more people and less interruptions - it isn't a long game, I swear. But it does seem fairly difficult to slow someone down once they get a big lead - unless the right objective comes out, that forces opponents to discard a completed objective. I think the push-your-luck element of the rewards is nice, too. It's my bet to win the Spiel Des Jahres - and if it does, we will have played three SDJ winners in one evening - Kingdom Builder, 7 Wonders and Bingus (or Domus!).

    Kingdom Builder was good - it's very dry though. Not just the abstract nature of it - the shifting special powers and objectives really mean you spend every turn trying to maximise your score - I'm surprised it won the SDJ, as that aspect feels almost meta-game-ish. I got it in a trade thinking it might be one to play with the kids, but there's very little for them to hook into.
    I suppose lots of games are like this, and I can't quite work out what the distinction I'm tying to make is, but if you compare for instance Agricola (family vers) to Agricola ACG&S; big Gric really appeals to my kids, as they can enjoy building up their farm and managing the bits. Little Gric is an exercise in maximising your points, and fell very flat with Matilda.

    It's just degree of abstraction I'm talking about; Chess is essentially very abstract, but your goal is very clear, and very thematic. I suppose it's when you're manoeuvring for points rather than for something thematic that then gives you points, perhaps . . . I've confused myself.

    I do like Kingdom Builder though.

  4. I'd like to play Kingdom Builder again too. Last time I was left with a bit of a bad taste after misunderstanding a rule (Joe fell foul of it too) and thinking I was doing really well. But whose fault is that, right?

  5. Nice break down there Sam. I've started to really like the guilds. The right one can really kick on your score, as you said.

    By the way Agricola is out for the iPad tomorrow. In two minds whether to get it.

  10. I did it, I downloaded Agricola for the iOS. It's extremely good. The right kind of blend between app and board game. I'm pleased to say though, that in every case of a board game that I have played on a computer I would much rather be playing the real thing. Also I would rather be play these apps than proper computer games.

  11. Yeah, it's a little fiddlesome on the iPhone - only played a family game so far. I'm impressed by the amount they've implemented - such as the drafting variant for occupations and minor improvements. and the K and I decks to come - it'll be a while before I feel the need for those.

  12. It's very slick. Excellent on the ipad. I agree, the E deck will keep me going for now. I'm planning to limit myself so I don't get bored of it.....if thats possible.
